When you bring your baby home, the days blur together. One moment you’re staring at their tiny fingers and listening to those soft newborn sighs, and the next you realize an entire week has passed in a haze of feedings, diaper changes, and snuggles. It feels like time is both standing still and racing by.
That’s exactly why the first couple of weeks are so precious—and why they’re the perfect time to capture your baby’s very first portraits.

There’s something almost magical about photographing babies when they’re between seven and nine days old. By this point, your baby has had a chance to adjust to life outside the womb, but they still love being curled up and swaddled, just as they were before they were born.
At this age, babies are:
When I place a 7–9 day old baby in a soft wrap or gently tuck them into a cozy pose, they melt right into it. It’s almost as though they’re reminding us of where they just came from—the safe, warm space they knew so well. And that’s what makes these images so special: they preserve a moment that truly vanishes in the blink of an eye.

But newborn photography isn’t only about perfect posing. It’s about emotion. It’s about capturing the way your baby’s tiny hand curls around your finger, or the way they scrunch their nose in their sleep. During those first days, these little details are pure magic—and they’re gone so quickly.
Every parent I’ve worked with has told me the same thing: “I can’t believe how much my baby has already changed since the session.” Even just a week later, babies are more alert, stretching out longer, and slowly leaving behind that curled-up newborn look. That’s why the timing matters so much.

Don’t worry—beautiful portraits are possible at any age. If your baby is a little older, we may capture more stretches, awake expressions, or lifestyle moments of you holding and soothing them. These images are just as meaningful, but they do have a different feel. For those timeless, sleepy newborn portraits, though, that 7–9 day window is where the magic happens.

Since babies rarely arrive right on schedule, the best approach is to book your newborn session during your pregnancy. I’ll reserve space on my calendar around your due date, and once your little one is here, we’ll set the exact session date. That way, you won’t miss this fleeting stage, no matter when your baby decides to make their debut.

The newborn phase is so short. One day you’re cradling a tiny, curled-up baby, and before you know it, they’re lifting their head, rolling over, and flashing gummy smiles. Those first days—the ones that feel like a blur—are worth remembering in a way that photos make possible.
When I photograph a baby in those first 7–9 days, I’m not just creating images. I’m giving you a way to hold onto the sweetness of this stage forever. Someday, you’ll look back at those pictures and remember exactly how it felt when your baby fit so perfectly into your arms.
And that’s why this little window of time matters so much—it’s not just about photos. It’s about capturing love in its freshest, purest form.
If you’re expecting, now is the perfect time to start planning. I’d love to help you capture your baby’s very first portraits in those magical first days of life. Reach out to me while you’re still pregnant to reserve your spot, and together we’ll make sure you have timeless images to treasure forever.
