A couple maternity photoshoot, aka a maternity photoshoot with your partner, captures the love and bond you have for one another.
It’s so important to capture these special moments together before your new baby arrives.
In this article, I walk through how to prepare and what to keep in mind before your maternity photoshoot with your spouse or partner.
For context, the images you see are from a couple maternity photoshoot I did in my personal studio in the Fort Worth, TX area.
Outside is great for those beautiful scenic views (if you have them). But when you are several months pregnant, you live in Dallas, TX, and you want intimate maternity images with your spouse or partner a studio session is ideal.
Especially in the summer. No pregnant woman wants to brave the Texas heat.
The studio also allows you to be more intimate with your partner and there is no rush to get the shots we need because we’re not chasing the sun.
As you can see the couple in the images are rocking both a black and white top and blue jeans. You can’t go wrong with this combination.
These outfits are great in color and black and white, as I’ll discuss in a moment.
And as far as color goes (check out this link here for examples) we want to stay away from clashing colors with your spouse. To play it safe, a solid option is to stick with pastels.
When it comes to patterns it’s best to stick with both mom and partner wearing solid clothes.
But if mom has a floral outfit or outfit with a design she likes then I suggest the partner wear a solid outfit so the couple doesn’t clash in the photos.
Side note: check out my maternity wardrobe here.
When it comes to the theme of your maternity photoshoot with your spouse, I find that either a solid background or lifestyle theme is best.
Why? Because both allow for the couple to be more intimate with each other.
As you can see in the images we decided to do a variety of different poses. Some are more straightforward. Some more intimate.
As your photographer, I will have plenty of options and ideas for you. But it is up to you to decide if you feel comfortable with it or not.
When in doubt we can try the pose out, grab the shot, and then in the selection process you can choose if you’d like to purchase the image or not.
My suggestion is to keep an open mind. You never know what pose ideas you and your spouse will love.
Color vs black-and-white
I’ll keep this simple.
Both color and black-and-white images serve their respective purposes but black and white images are timeless.
Ultimately any image can be edited to be color or black and white.
Hopefully, you feel a bit more comfortable and prepared for your couple’s maternity photoshoot.
Trust me, as I said above, these images are special and you will look back fondly on this time for years to come.
