When you look at a beautiful newborn photograph, you see your baby’s tiny fingers, sweet little features, and all those precious details that make this stage so special. But what you don’t see is everything that happens behind the scenes to create that finished image.

As a Fort Worth newborn photographer, I spend just as much care and attention on the editing process as I do during your newborn session. In fact, editing an entire newborn gallery can take approximately 2 hours or more, depending on the images and the amount of detailed retouching involved.

How Long Does Newborn Photography Editing Take?

A typical newborn gallery from my studio includes approximately 25–30 finished images. Each of those images is individually edited by hand.

That means I don’t simply apply one preset to the entire gallery and consider the images finished. I take the time to look at each photograph individually and make adjustments to create a beautiful, consistent gallery.

For a typical session, the editing process takes around 2 hours.

Some galleries may take less time, while others require additional attention—especially when they include more detailed images or composites.

What Goes Into Editing a Newborn Session?

Newborn photography requires a very soft and natural editing style. My goal is to enhance the photograph while still keeping your baby looking like your baby.

During the editing process, I may carefully adjust:

• Skin tones and redness
• Baby’s skin and flaky areas
• Exposure and brightness
• Shadows and highlights
• White balance and color
• Small scratches or temporary blemishes
• Wrinkles and distractions in blankets and wraps
• Background details
• Overall consistency between photographs

Newborn skin can change from one image to the next, especially during a session. Babies can become red, have little flakes of dry skin, or develop tiny scratches. I take the time to gently clean up those temporary imperfections while keeping their natural features intact.

The result is a polished photograph that still feels natural and authentic.

Why Are Newborn Composites More Time-Consuming?

Some newborn poses require an additional level of editing called a composite.

A composite is created by combining portions of multiple photographs into one final image. This is particularly important for certain newborn poses where baby needs to be supported by a parent or assistant for safety.

Instead of trying to capture everything in one photograph, I can take multiple images while keeping a hand close to baby for support. I then carefully combine the photographs during the editing process.

This can take considerably longer than editing a standard image because I have to:

1. Select the best photographs.
2. Carefully combine the images.
3. Blend the different portions together.
4. Make sure the baby’s position and proportions look natural.
5. Edit the final image so it matches the rest of the gallery.

The extra time is absolutely worth it, especially when it allows me to create a beautiful image while keeping your baby safe throughout the session.
